Itinerary

Meet us in Reykjavik, where we take off on our mini-bus journey along the unique South Coast of Iceland. While driving through one of Iceland’s most productive agricultural area, take in the views of Mount Hekla and the notorious Eyjafjallajökull, two of Iceland’s most famous active volcanoes.

Then, as you draw nearer to the Eyjafjöll mountain ridge, get ready to see some of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls, such as Gljúfrabúi, hidden behind a rock formation, and Seljalandsfoss, which falls off a sloping cliff, making it possible for you to easily walk behind it – a truly unforgettable experience.

We drive a further few kilometres to take in the mighty Skógafoss waterfall, known for its double rainbow phenomena. Legend says a treasure chest is hidden behind this cascade, but don’t go looking, because Skógafoss is a magnificently powerful waterfall, 25 metres (80 feet) wide with a fall of 60 metres (200 feet) so admiring it from a safe distance is advised. But you get more than a frontal view, because alongside this gorgeous waterfall is a stairway, and the 527-step climb is rewarding indeed because watching the waterfall from above is an amazing experience – and you get the ocean view as an added bonus.

The drive along the Eyjafjoll mountain ridge is wonderful because every few kilometres you see something special. After leaving Skógafoss, you have the ocean views on the right and meadows and hills filled with sheep and horses on the left – not to mention the looming glaciers completing the horizon. And next up is the magical Dyrhólaey. When we stop here you can hardly picture a more grandiose view: to the south, you have the Atlantic Ocean, the glaciers and mountains rule the north, in the east, you see black lava columns and to the west is an other-worldly Black Sand Beach.

At the tip of the peninsula, you see a gigantic black arch of lava standing in the sea, and from which the peninsula’s name is derived: Dyrhólaey literally translates to “Door hill island”. After enjoying the views and exploring the Black Sand Beach Reynisfjara, which has been voted one of the top ten most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world, we are only a few minutes drive away from the charming little town of Vik, famous for its red-roofed white church towering on a hill above the town.

After taking in all the extraordinary beauty of Vík and its surroundings it is time to head back to Reykjavik to reflect on our incredible experience along the beautiful South Coast of Iceland
