North Iceland

The North of Iceland is a region of contrasts. Long valleys and peninsulas determine the landscape sometimes filled with vegetation, at other barren. The midnight sun or the Northern Lights are awe-inspiring as one nears the Arctic Circle in the Northern Latitudes.

Akureyri, Iceland’s second-biggest urban area, is located in the north. A popular route is the Arctic Coast way. Travelling the Arctic Coast way means you will leave the common routes behind to discover some of the most remote places in Iceland.

Many of the towns in the north are still dedicated to fishing. Small harbours and colourful fishing houses accompany you on your way. Besides the Arctic Coast way, one will find another famous route called the Diamond Circle.

The Diamond Circle includes some of the most impressive sights in Iceland. Five key destinations such as the historical and picturesque Goðafoss waterfall, the otherworldly landscape of Lake Mývatn, Europe’s most powerful waterfall called Dettifoss, the crescent-shaped wonder of Ásbyrgi canyon and Húsavík, a town known from the Netflix movie and the whale watching capital of Iceland.

Another most see are in the North is Skagafjörður. The Icelandic horse is the icon of this area and we will see a lot of them trotting around. If you want to take the road less traveled then the North of Iceland should be your choice.
