Golden Circle
The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most popular route – and for a good reason. During one day you can explore the place of Iceland’s first parliament, the split of the tectonic plates, a hot spring area with the world-famous Geysir, and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland.
There are three main stops on a Golden Circle tour. First you can explore Þingvellir national park, the home of the first Icelandic parliament. Besides its historic background, Þingvellir is also a place to experience the power of mother nature. The mid-Atlantic ridge goes right through the national park, and it is the only place in the world where you can see tectonic plates above sea level.
Haukadalur is another stop on the Golden Circle. It is the home of the famous Geysir, the one that gave its name to all the other Geysers in the world. The main one is dormant for a couple of years, but its slightly smaller brother called “Strokkur” is highly active. Every 5-8 min Strokkur will eruot up to 25m. Truly an amazing spectacle.
Last but not least we have Gullfoss, the “Golden Falls”. Water coming from the second biggest glacier in Iceland is running down two plateaus with a total height of 32 meters. In the summertime, you can sometimes spot a nice rainbow above the waterfall and during winter the scenery changes completely as parts of the waterfall freeze over.
The Golden Circle is just a short drive away from Reykjavik and is therefore great to combine it with some of the best activities Iceland has to offer. You can’t miss the Golden Circle when you come to Iceland.
