Itinerary
Day 1: Airport Transfer
On the day of your arrival, your private guide will pick you up at the Airport. The ride to the city takes around one hour. The rest of the day you have time to explore the city.
Day 2: Reykjanes Peninsula and Blue Lagoon
Our day starts with some action. We drive straight to a Lava cave called Raufarhólshellir. A journey into Raufarhólshellir is a unique experience and a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption as one walks in the path of lava that flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred east of the Bláfjöll mountains about 5200 years ago.
Afterward, we head to the Reykjanes Peninsula. Reykjanes is an intriguing part of Iceland. There is a lot to discover, from geothermal areas, stunning bird cliffs, and a lot of Icelandic folklore. After your pick-up, our first stop will be at Seltun. Seltun is an important high-temperature geothermal area. A boardwalk leads through the area. Seltún has many mud pots and fumaroles, and minerals deposited from geothermal solutions provide colorful sediments. We can find it next to Kleifarvatn lake and on top of an active volcano. Next up is Krýsuvíkurberg Cliff (only accessible from April – October). The cliffs are known for their rich birdlife and the fantastic view over the Atlantic ocean. Reykjanes is a highly active area, so no wonder our next stop will be another powerful geothermal area called Gunnuhver hot spring. The hot spring got its name from one troublesome ghost called Gunna and your guide will tell you the interesting story behind it. After a short drive, we will reach the bridge between the continents. As the name says, the bridge is connecting the European and the North American continent (geologically speaking).
Our day is not over yet. It is time to relax a little bit. We drop you off at the Blue Lagoon and you get some time to enjoy your premium package there. Beautiful lava fields surround the lagoon, and the water is known to have a positive impact on your skin.
Day 3: Golden Circle
It’s time to head on the road. Today we explore the Golden Circle. Our first stop is at Þingvellir, the place of the first Icelandic parliament. The first parliament was established there in 930 AD and it is, therefore, the oldest one in Europe. Besides all the history you can also see the Mid-Atlantic ridge. This is the split of the tectonic plates that divides Europe from North America. After that, we stop at Geysir. This “water puddle” gives its name to all the other Geysers in the world. It erupts every 5-8min and it is truly a big spectacle. After a short ride, we arrive at Gullfoss, the golden waterfall. In the summertime, up to 130.000 l/s are running down this powerful waterfall. In good weather conditions, we are also able to see Langjökull glacier as well. Our Lunch stop will be at Friðheimar Tomato Farm. Iceland is well known for its geothermal energy. We don’t only use it to heat our houses, we also use it to grow vegetables in greenhouses. Friðheimar Tomato Farm is probably the best place to experience it and that’s why we decided to have our Lunch stop here (please note: Lunch is not included in the tour price). We will take a short tour through the greenhouse before we can enjoy the food.
Day 4: Waterfalls, black sand beaches, and Viking Sagas
After your pick-up, we head out of the city. We shortly arrive in the countryside passing Hellisheiðarvirkjun, the geothermal power plant for the capital area. Our first stop is Seljalandsfoss waterfall. The waterfall lays underneath the well-known Eyfjallajokull, the volcano that erupted in 2010. If conditions allow, we take a walk behind the waterfall’s curtain before paying a visit to its nearby cousin Gljúfrabúi, found hidden from view in the mountainside. After a short ride, we arrive at Skogafoss waterfall. Skogafoss was featured in “Game of Thrones” and it is said that one of the first settlers has buried a treasure chest behind it. Next up is Reynisfjara black sand beach. The beach was once rated as one of the 10 most beautiful places worldwide. In the summertime, hundreds of Puffins are nesting here and the rock stacks called Reynisdrangar are standing picturesque in the ocean next to the beach. Reynisfjara is also the perfect place to grab something to eat. On our way to our overnight accommodation, we pass the Skaftafell national park and Iceland’s biggest glacier called Vatnajökull. Your guide will also make a stop next to the lava fields that were created during an eruption of the Volcano Laki in 1783/84. The eruption was so severe, that around 25% of the Icelandic population died.
Day 5: Glacier Lagoon and Eastfjords
After breakfast, we head to one of the most popular locations in Iceland, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Big icebergs are breaking apart the man glacier and they are then floating around in the lagoon that is situated in front of the glacier. After some time, the icebergs melted enough to float out to the ocean. Waves bring back the crystal clear ice to the black beach next to the lagoon, creating a special place called the Diamond Beach. After a short ride, we arrive at Vestrahorn mountain, probably one of the best spots to take a great landscape photo. The drive continues on narrow roads along the fjords and our next stop will be Djúpivogur, a small fishing village with a long history. Next to the city is Búlandstindur mountain, and it is said that this mountain can make wishes come true during the summer solstice. During the summer months (April to October), we also pay a visit to Stuðlagil canyon. Basalt columns surround the canyon, and turquoise water makes it a special place. We end the day with a relaxing swim at Vök Baths.
Day 6: The power of the North
Today we had to a region that is known for its beauty. Thanks to its remote location, places are less crowded and we can enjoy the magic of mother nature. The first stop of the day will be the Dettifoss waterfall (please note that Dettifoss is only accessible during summer – April to October). Dettifoss is Europe’s most powerful waterfall and on average 193.000 l/s run down the waterfall. Now it is time for lake Myvatn and its surrounding area. The area was created during a volcanic eruption 2.300 years ago. Many beautiful places can be found here, such as Hverir, where we can see many smoking fumaroles and boiling pots, Grjótagjá, a small lava cave with a geothermal hot spring in its depths, and Dimmuborgir, a lava rock formation known as the “Black Fortress” and a place full of Icelandic folklore. Thanks to the geothermal activity in this area, a big power plant called Krafla can be found here. After learning all about green energy in Iceland, we head to our last stop Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods. It is fed by the fourth-biggest river called Skjálfandafljót and is definitely one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country.
Day 7: Whales and wildlife
Starting in Akureyri, the capital of the North, we head to a small fishing village called Dalvik. The city is located on the Tröllaskagi Peninsula and with some luck we can spot some whales in the distance while walking along the harbor. The day continues with a stop at Hvítserkur, also known as the Troll of Northwest Iceland. The basalt rock is 15m high, standing beautiful in the Húnaflói Bay. We now drive in the direction of Reykjavik and the next stop will be Grábrók volcano. It is the largest of three craters and after a short walk to the top, you will have an amazing view over the surrounding lava fields.
Day 8: Snæfellsnes Penninsula
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is often called “Iceland in Miniature”. It is the perfect combination of waterfalls, rough lava fields, black sand beaches, and Icelandic folklore. We head west and our first stop is Berserkjahraun Lava Field. It was created around 4.000 years ago after the three surrounding volcanos erupted shortly after each other. The name also comes from an exciting story back from the Viking age. Your guide will tell you all about it and he’ll show you the way to a secret and hidden waterfall. Kirkjufell, the most photographed mountain in Iceland is next on our list. You probably noticed it on the TV show “Game of Thrones”. It is surrounded by a beautiful waterfall you’ll get enough time to stroll around the walking paths to explore the area. Countless volcanic craters can be seen during the drive. Now it’s time to put a foot on one of the dormant craters on the peninsula. Saxhóll volcanic crater was created around 3.000 years ago and it is 100m high. A staircase makes the walk to the top very easy and the reward is a brilliant view over the surrounding lava fields. Iceland is known for its black sand beaches. Djúpalónssandur is one of them and this place will definitely amaze you. Back in the day, a harbor for fishing boats could be found here and all the fishermen had to prove their strength beforehand. To do that, they had to lift stones of different weights. Only the strongest were able to secure a spot on one of the boats. The stones still can be found on the beach and you will have a chance to test your own strength. The next stop will be in Arnastapi, a beautiful and charming fishing village. During the time, powerful waves eroded the cliffs and left the stunning rock formations behind that can be seen today. Also, a sculpture of Bárður Snæfellsás, the guardian of the Penninsula, can be found here. Of course, you can’t miss Budakirkja Black Church when you are around the peninsula. The church was build in 1703. After the Danish king decided to dismiss the church in 1819, several residents fought for the reclamation and in 1849 they gt the allowance to build a new chapel. A woman named Steinunn saved some of the old artifacts and thanks to her, we can still see them today. We will have one last stop at a beautiful golden-colored beach called Ytri-Tunga. Huge seal colonies can be found at this beach during the whole year and your guide will lead you to the place where you can find them.
Day 9: Airport Transfer
Depending on your flight time you can spend a day in the city before a private driver will bring you to the airport.
